Zatímco mnoho samců rodu Pseudotropheus, Melanochromis aLabeotropheus je modrých, jsou samci. P. lombar¬doi kadmiově žlutí (viz snímek) a samice jasně modré se šesti tmavými příčnými pruhy na těle.
Při chovu v akváriu je nutno počítat s úžasnou agresivitou nejen samců, ale i samic. Je třeba napodobit přírodní podmínky, tj. vytvořit z kamenů hustou síť skrýší po dně a u zadní stěny akvária je navršit třeba až ke hladině. Tlamovec žlutý nevytváří pevné páry. Chováme proto několik samic společně se samcem. Ryby se vytřou na vyhlídnutý plochý kámen. Samice sebere jikry ústy do hrdelního vaku, kde se vyvíjejí. Asi po 14 dnech ji můžeme přelovit do samostatné.nádrže. Přibližně za další týden (celkem 21 dní po výtěru) se při teplotě vody 27 °C lihnou mladé a opouštějí tlamku matky. Jsou velké 10—12 mm a od začátku přijímají buchanky a malé hrotnatky. Jejich mladistvé zabarve¬ni je nádherné — třpytivě jasně modré a vyrovnají se jím mořským korálovým rybám.
